# Research window

> How far back Signals looks for developments.

The **Window** dropdown next to Refresh Research controls the timeframe. Options: 30 / 90 / 180 / 365 days.

## Which to pick

| Industry | Recommended |
| -------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| Consumer tech / fintech | **30-90 days** — fast news cycles |
| Enterprise SaaS | **90 days** |
| Pharma / life sciences | **180 days** — trial + regulatory cycles are quarterly |
| Regulated (banking, legal) | **180-365 days** |
| Deep tech / research-heavy | **365 days** |

## The auto-widen fallback

If your first pass returns zero signals, Xura automatically retries with a wider window (2× your pick, capped at 365). Progress banner updates to reflect: *"No recent signals found — widening the window to 180 days…"*

The digest also notes the widening: *"Found 6 recent signals (widened to last 180 days) across your competitor set."*

## Persistence

Your window choice saves to your profile (`researchWindowDays`), so it survives reloads and follows you across devices.

## Trade-offs

* **Narrower window** → fresher signals but risk empty runs on slow-moving industries.
* **Wider window** → higher signal count but staler news.
* **Wide + retry off** — not currently a knob. The auto-widen is a feature, not a bug.
